About this event
Brilliant Exiles features portraits of 57 remarkable American women who went to Paris between 1900 and the eve of World War II. In Paris, they sought recognition that they could not get in the US for their
accomplishments either because they were women, women of color or lesbians. The women were artists, writers, publishers, journalists, photographers, designers, dancers, actors, and singers who pursued personal and artistic freedom and escape from the conventional, restrictive societal challenges that they encountered the US. You will recognize some of them, but many are unknown today, and much of their creative work has faded from our cultural heritage.
National Portrait Gallery docent Sheila Lopez will bring these exceptional women back onto our horizons. We will meet at the Information Desk in the G Street Lobby.
Maximum number of guests is 20.
