Raw Dealwas directed by one of the great film noir directors, Anthony Mann, and was filmed by one of the finest cinematographers in film history, John Alton. Together, they created one of the richest and highly regarded films in the American film noir genre.
As the story begins, inmate Joe Sullivan (Dennis O’Keefe) who has taken a rap for Rick Coyle (Raymond Burr), a mobster who owes him $50,000, is planning an escape from prison with the help his girl, Pat (Claire Trevor). Unbeknownst to the pair, they have been set up by Rick knowing that Joe will be caught escaping and will be either shot or locked away forever. But Joe escapes unharmed. While on the lam, Joe kidnaps his beautiful social worker, Ann (Marsha Hunt) and forces her to help him and Pat evade the police. A smoldering love triangle begins as the plot twists and turns.
The screening will begin with a brief introduction to the film’s highlights and its significance in film history. A discussion of the film will follow.
